Needs & Wants
As human beings we all have needs. Whether those needs are a result of natural development and maturation; a diagnosis, disability, or neurodiverse condition; or simply a difficult time in their lives, Child's Play offers a safe space for children's needs to be met, allowing for real learning and growth.
Acknowledging human needs as opposed to “special” or “different” needs is a core value of Child's Play. We support the move away from the deficits-based medical model of disability and towards a rights-based model as set out in the UNCRPD. We will all need "special" or extra care and consideration at some stage in our lives, something different to the norm. The more we see and say these human needs, the more normal and accepted they will become in our society.
Play is big business…
We must meet our children where they are in their play and allow them time to master prerequisite skills. Strong and fluent foundational skills achieved through natural environment teaching are the markers of high-quality Applied Behaviour Analysis programming, and we are proud to explicitly include them in our Mission Statement
As experts in the field with years of experience…
Finally, when we say meaningful and effective education, we know what works. We know that certain timelines, approaches, and curricula result in the best outcomes for the children we are privileged to serve. These are the gold standards of the industry: behaviourally based, neurodevelopmentally informed, delivered by an interdisciplinary team that includes the child and family through a child's primary occupation, play.
It's time we put our knowledge into action and play with purpose.
